The Tigers capped an incredible come from behind “walk off victory” over the Stars on Sunday to win 12-11 and added another league championship to their crown. This game was dominated from start to finish by a determined Stars team led by The Grinch and Mr. Scrooge. The Stars scored 4 runs the first inning and never looked back as they continued to pile on more runs to their lead thru out the game. Meanwhile the Tigers spread their holiday cheer around by booting the ball, walking batters, giving up outs and runs in the field. Tigers hitters also joined in and left runners stranded and didn’t take advantage of what was given. The Stars had an answer for everything the Tigers threw at them. It was a hard fought game for both sides but the Stars held the field and the Tigers struggled to keep pace.
The game featured a bit of everything; a close play at the plate to get a head first sliding Robert Swartz. An almost triple play by a diving Les Guest (but he dropped the ball). A boneheaded call at second base from umpire Don to kill a critical Tiger rally late in the game, these were just a few of the many highs and lows. The Stars began a stall after their first inning lead and lulled the Tigers into a funk, the Tigers played along until their final at bat, down by 3 runs and with the top of the order up we had them right where we wanted um. The battle cry went out. HO HO HO!
Miles drew a walk, Giacco doubled down the line on a controversial call, Milcoun plated Miles on a sac and Ainsworth hit a long bomb single to score Giacco. Noel (Mr. Christmas) delivered a single to put runners at first and second with two outs. This set the stage for our redemption. Down by a run and with the game on the line, Les Guest played killer Claus and smashed a drive to deep left center, the runner from second scored easily but Noel on first rounded third and was leaking oil, he slowed down to look back and check his body parts, the throw to the plate clearly beat him but the catcher misplayed the hop and the run scored. Meanwhile in all the excitement Les rounded third and stumbled and fell flat on his face. The Tiger dugout erupted and ran on the field to celebrate their walk off victory. They had done it! Pulled off a Christmas Miracle and sent a devastated Stars team a crushing blow.
Afterwards, the Tigers counted their many blessings and toasted to the baseball Gods. Great ending to a great season. ~ Neil Miles (Tigers)
